Seas given as significant wave height, which is the average

height of the highest 1/3 of the waves. Individual waves may be

more than twice the significant wave height.

Synopsis for the Gulf of America

515 AM EDT Mon Mar 16 2026



.SYNOPSIS...A strong cold front has entered the northwestern Gulf

during the overnight hours. It will push southeastward, and reach

from the Florida Big Bend area to just south of Veracruz, Mexico 

around noon today, then over the Florida Straits and Yucatan 

Peninsula by early Tue morning. Widespread strong to near gale- 

force N winds and rough seas are anticipated behind the front. 

These winds will continue to peak at gale-force off the Texas and 

Louisiana coast until later this morning, and peak at strong gale-

force off the Mexico coast later this morning through early this 

evening. In addition, winds near Tampico and Veracruz will gust 

frequently to storm force. As the front moves farther 

southeastward away from the Gulf late tonight through Tue, 

conditions in the Gulf will gradually improve from north to south.

In the wake of the front, high pressure will build across the 

region into midweek.
